Our story: building leaders through baseball

Discover the inspiration behind Backstop Leadership Initiative and our commitment to developing confident young athletes on and off the field. Learn about our unique approach to combining baseball skills with essential leadership qualities.

The spark: how it all began

Backstop Leadership Initiative was founded on a simple belief: baseball has the power to build leaders.  As players, we realized that some of the most valuable lessons we learned weren't about hitting, throwing, or winning games. They were about leadership, accountability, resilience, teamwork, and serving others.

Our unique approach: leading from behind the plate

The catching position became the foundation of our program because catchers naturally lead. They communicate, encourage, make decisions under pressure, and put their teammates first. Those same qualities define great leaders in all aspects of life. Our initiative stands out by intentionally cultivating these leadership traits through specialized catcher training and dedicated mentorship.

Our core values

Seven core values guide everything we do:

  1. Character – Do the right thing, even when no one is watching.
  2. Communication – Encourage, listen, and speak with respect.
  3. Service – Put others before yourself.
  4. Growth – Commit to learning every day.
  5. Teamwork – Success is shared.
  6. Excellence – Give your best effort in everything you do.
  7. Leadership – Lead by example in words and actions.

More Than Baseball

Winning games is exciting.

Learning new skills is rewarding.

But our greatest victories happen long after the final out.

We celebrate when a player:

  • Helps a classmate.
  • Shows respect to an opponent.
  • Volunteers in the community.
  • Admits a mistake.
  • Encourages someone who feels left out.
  • Demonstrates courage in difficult situations.

Those moments reflect the true purpose of Backstop Leadership Initiative.
